RARE! AMTRAK DASH 8 #503 LEADS SURFLINER WITH AMAZING K5LA & HORN SHOWS!
You just had to be there...
On April 22, 2024 AMTK #503, a GE Dash 8-32BWH, led southbound Pacific Surfliner train 580 from Los Angeles to San Diego. The SC-44 Charger originally on point had a mechanical issue and lucky enough 503 happened to be the savior. Dozens of railfans gathered trackside last minute to witness a rarity. For some of us older railfans (in our twenties and thirties) this was nostalgic as it was more often to witness these locomotives on the Surfline. I sure hope this wasn't the last time a Dash 8 leads. Enjoy the video as we chase AMTK #503 from Encinitas, Sorrento Valley, and Downtown San Diego!

You will see a BNSF SD70ACe, Warbonnets, CN and CP Units, The Empty UP Produce Express, Ex-Southern Pacific Engines that were repanted to UP, a Nathan P3, Mixed Power, and of course the famous Tehachapi Loop. You will see a lot of rare stuff. OH!!! You will also see a CSX Short Nose unit!!

I met up with friends and on the eastbound trip to San Bernardino we caught it at Los Angeles Union Station, Covina, Upland, Rialto, and San Bernardino. The next day, for the westbound trip, we started off in San Bernardino, following up with Fontana, Eastern LA, and then the final station stop at LA Union Station.

3:59 Amtrak F59PHI had a pretty weak horn.
These are the numbers: 455, and P42DC 42. The rarest Amtrak units of P42DCs!
That horn you guys hear is called a Nathan K5CA-LS Emergency horn, From GO Transit and Exo Trains
It also sound like a Sunrail horn
I wonder why ACE and Coaster didint even bother to change the horn, it’s not mandated to have K5CA’s here, ACE should’ve put the musical and magical K5LA horn, Coaster too
